Supreme Court - Lethal Injections OK

By Brian Kirwin
April 16, 2008

In a surprise to no one except Governor Tim Kaine, the Supreme Court today threw out the challenge to the constitutionality of lethal injection. It wasn’t even close! 7-2 vote, with former ACLU lawyer Ruth Bader Ginsburg standing in the lonely corner with David Souter. Kaine’s decision was even more foolish as the opinions are coming out.

Obenshain makes it official: not running for AG

By J.R. Hoeft
April 15, 2008

When State Sen. Ken Cuccinelli declared his intentions to seek the GOP nomination for Virginia Attorney General in 2009, it was expected that State Sen. Mark Obenshain would eventually make clear that he would not seek the nomination. That prognostication came true today.

Why I can’t defend payday lenders

By Brian Kirwin
April 15, 2008

I have heard several elected officials and read a few bloggers defend payday lenders, and honestly, if their arguments were the end of the discussion, it would be easy to let the industry exist. But then the industry opens its mouth and makes itself indefensible.

VPOD: Del. Jeff Frederick, candidate for RPV chairman

By J.R. Hoeft
April 14, 2008

Del. Jeff Frederick is criss-crossing the commonwealth running a very aggressive campaign amongst Republicans to be the next chairman of the party. I recently heard him speak in Virginia Beach, today I caught up with him while he travels in the Shenandoah Valley. In this podcast, Frederick addresses concerns over endorsements he said he received and the analogy of a “rat in a coke bottle” that he has been using in his speeches. He also discusses his vision for the RPV, why an elected official makes sense as party chairman, and much more.

Quotes of the podcast:

“I have no problems being a team player, but when I think we’re being marched into a burning fire, I’m gonna say something.”

-and-

“We can’t continue to do the same thing over and over and over again and expect we’re going to get a different result.”

Pppfffffffffftttttttttttt….

By J.R. Hoeft
April 14, 2008

It would appear from posts over the weekend by J, Scott, and Riley, that Democratic Party of Virginia executive director Levar Stoney feels that protecting tire-slashers is more important than cooperating with a police investigation.

Stoney, when he was in Milwaukee for Kerry-Edwards in 2004, apparently was aware of five volunteers who slashed the tires on nearly 100 vehicles rented by the GOP, and then lied about that knowledge to the Milwaukee police.

So, this is the leadership of the Democratic Party in Virginia? People who fail to cooperate with police and will lie to protect criminal behavior? What is the definition of “is”?

When is 5.4% Unemployment better than 5.1%?

By Brian Kirwin

When Bill Clinton is President, of course. Media folks proclaim Bush’s 5.1% unemployment is an economic collapse, but Clinton’s higher unemployment was a “booming economy?”

They used to call this extortion

Norfolk State University will block Norfolk’s light rail plans unless the taxpayers purchase NSU’s president’s home, pay for a parking deck near campus and pay for sound and sight barriers between campus and the light rail line.

It gets better! After taxpayers buy the president’s home, NSU wants them to transfer the deed back to the university so it can be used as a student welcome center.

Let’s see….what should Norfolk’s response be? The story here.

Obama would like to “change” the “bitter” people

By J.R. Hoeft
April 12, 2008

During a recent fund-raiser in San Francisco, Obama said of his interactions of people in Pennsylvania:

“You go into some of these small towns in Pennsylvania, and like a lot of small towns in the Midwest, the jobs have been gone now for 25 years and nothing’s replaced them,” Obama, an Illinois senator, said.

“And it’s not surprising then they get bitter, they cling to guns or religion or antipathy to people who aren’t like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations,” he said.

Riley has more details
.

Heaven forbid people have an abiding respect for the second amendment, faith in a high power, and a belief that immigration should be legal and trade should be fair. Ahh…the bitterness in that.

Senate: McCain’s allowed to be President

By Brian Kirwin
April 11, 2008

Senate Democrats are offering a resolution saying John McCain would be allowed to be President. Co-Sponsors include Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton. Seems some thought since McCain was born overseas to parents serving in the military, that it would violate the Constitution’s “natural born citizen” requirement.

Kudos for the Democrats for reading the US Constitution. Sources say they’re hard at work now searching for the word “abortion” in the same document.
