Fimian: Telecommuting the federal bureaucracy?

An idea that Republican congressional candidate Keith Fimian (VA-11) recently floated to help with energy costs and transportation issues was more telecommuting for federal workers. From his most recent newsletter, Fimian writes:

One idea that has not been explored enough is allowing more federal employees to work from their homes a few days per week.

As a small businessman I figured out long ago that many of our employees could successfully work from home. Many now do; and they are happier for it! It’s a win-win. It’s less expensive for the employer. It’s better for the employee, who can spend more time with family and less time commuting. It means fewer cars on the road during rush hour. And it means less energy consumption.

Some jobs must be done in the workplace but with a good internet connection and a phone there is no reason why most government employees can’t work from their homes a day or two a week.

This approach works in business and it ought to work in government too.

I like the way he thinks!

Fimian also wrote that he has already banked $760K for the upcoming campaign. So, while the Dems still duke it out, Fimian is getting ready for the general election.

the Patent Office where my sister works has made great strides in telecommuting. in other places however where it requires attendance in the office, even a partial telecommuting allowance will help ease traffic, etc. I used to consult at a startup where I worked from home until 10:30ish, went to the office for a few hours, then worked from home the rest of the evening.
