McDonnell-Bolling ’09
By JR Hoeft | Monday, March 24th, 2008 | PoliticsGOP unity. Allen’s not running. AG nom remains competitive.
Six years ago, when I first started my political travels across Virginia, I did so with a good friend and colleague, Bob McDonnell. Little did we know that we would have the privilege of serving the people of Virginia as Lieutenant Governor and Attorney General.
Bob McDonnell is a good friend and a good man, and he has done an outstanding job serving as the Attorney General of Virginia for the past two and half years. It has been a privilege to work with him.
As you know, Bob has also expressed an interest in running for Governor in 2009 and I think he would make a great Governor. Should Bob decide to seek the office of Governor, he will have my full, complete and enthusiastic support.
Let me say just one other thing about the 2009 campaigns.
While I will not be a candidate for Governor in 2009, I do plan to seek re-election to the office of Lieutenant Governor.
The first key to winning back the office of Governor is returning unity to our party. By Republicans uniting early, and listening to all Virginians, while the Democrats face a lengthy primary contest, we will gain a significant and powerful advantage heading into the general election next November. Bill and I will work hard to ensure this happens.
We are prepared to do something rare in Virginia politics. We will run as a ticket: McDonnell-Bolling. Bill will have a significant and visible role in my campaign. He will not only be my running mate, he will be a trusted advisor and sounding board. We will travel Virginia together, to earn the trust of the citizens in order to return practical, conservative leadership to Richmond.
TC, in addition to Riley, Kat, and J, also blogs on this.
Riley has highlights from today’s conference call with the LG, as does Vivian, who also catches up with Bolling’s potential Democratic opponent, Norfolk’s Del. Ken Alexander.

Well, well, well… Speculation running rampant (UPDATED)…
With about an hour to go before Lt. Gov. Bolling is scheduled to make a “major announcement” (planned for 1:30pm today), WRVA is reporting that it probably won’t be that he’s running for Governor in 2009… Now that’s very interesting… The times…

Unfortunately, Bill has decided that this isn’t his time, but by doing so he has virtually guaranteed that we keep the LG’s office in 2009.

McDonnell as Governor: I’ll have to decide which state board or commission I want an appointment to.
This is the best news I’ve heard for the Virginia Republican Party in a long time. It may end up being something similar to what’s going on at the national level right now – the Republicans have thier nominees set while we sit back and watch the Dems tear themselves apart with a messy primary.
Impressive. I’d say the waters just started looking a little rougher for the Dems in VA ’09. Of course, McDonnell honestly doesn’t need to worry, he’s a shoo in for the big chair in ’09. VA always elects a gov of the opposite party to the president…
