In a letter to U.S. Rep. Ike Skelton (D-MO), chairman of the House Armed Service Committee, U.S. Rep. Thelma Drake (R-VA) has requested that the actress Angelina Jolie testify before the committee.

Jolie recently wrote an Op-Ed in the Washington Post that offered her perspective on the current state of affairs in Iraq. She went to Iraq as a United Nations Goodwill Ambassador.

Jolie wrote:

“My visit left me even more deeply convinced that we not only have a moral obligation to help displaced Iraqi families, but also a serious, long-term, national security interest in ending this crisis.

“Today’s humanitarian crisis in Iraq — and the potential consequences for our national security — are great. Can the United States afford to gamble that 4 million or more poor and displaced people, in the heart of Middle East, won’t explode in violent desperation, sending the whole region into further disorder?

“What we cannot afford, in my view, is to squander the progress that has been made. In fact, we should step up our financial and material assistance.”

Drake, co-chair of the Human Trafficking Caucus, is interested in hearing Ms. Jolie’s perspective on humanitarian concerns and refugees.

That’s enough to re-elect Drake for me!

I generally dislike the appeal to celebrity to discuss serious issues.

On the other hand, Jolie does have a non-celebrity tie here, as the U.N. goodwill ambassador.

Still, they have her op-ed, and they could ask for a report. I see little reason why they need her to publicly testify.

But the real question is why Thelma Drake has asked for her to personally appear.

I would have expected one of the male members to make this move. :-)

Brian Kirwin Says: “That’s enough to re-elect Drake for me!” His statement says a lot about his political judgement and ability to select candidates… I hope you get out out puberty soon…

At least I don’t need my organization’s direction to tell me what my political judgment is.

I understand you use who ever is writing you a check to decide what to support…

Bill, is this fun for you? I venture to say you rely on politicians for a living a lot more than I do.

So both of you guys (Brian and William) earn some of your living off of politics then?

Uh, yeah, because she got that job being a non-celebrity…

    Ugh

You know, those morons Raising Kaine, NLS, etc. have linked to the articles (long after you guys had this up by the way) mocking Rep. Drake.

As if the Democrats never asked people from popular culture to come to the Hill. Not like they’re bringing Roger Clemens up for perjury or anything.

Brian: Yes I’m in this just for the fun of it. You really can’t take politicians seriously as they all are just playing the game… Have a little fun and lighten up. Life is too short to waste…

I have a blast and lots of funs outside of politics, Bill. Maybe you can come see my latest endeavor…it opens March 14th.
