Washington Post begrudgingly acknowledges the Dems shifting positions

In today’s Washington Post, buried in the front section on page A04, is a short article that brings up the numerous shifting positions of Sen. Hillary Clinton and Sen. Barack Obama. However, instead of holding the candidates accountable for their “changes of heart”, the article talks about how tough it is for politicians to stay consistent in today’s modern era with the internet, etc. where every word is scrutinized, video taped, and published.

“Politicians are like the rest of us,” [Robert Feldman, a professor of psychology at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst] said. “In everyday life, we say things to make ourselves look better, get people to like us, get a job. We all lie, to a greater or lesser extent. It’s the same with politicians.”

The article stated that “flip-flopping” on the campaign trail is a very human trait. The article also said that both Obama and Clinton as Senators have a voting record that can be analyzed.

So, are we, the voter, now supposed to feel sorry for politicians? Don’t misunderstand me — changing positions is fine, especially if you are upfront and honest about the change and are making the change based on new information, a change of heart, soul-searching, etc. But at least there is accountability. In this article, it’s almost as if the journalist is advocating giving the two Democratic presidential aspirants a free pass.

Then again, it is the Washington Post.

Jim, where are your cohorts? Have they been banished to post exclusively on their sites now?
