Stalemate in Richmond

By J.R. | February 26, 2008

The Homestead exemption failed in the Senate
Smoking bans were killed in the House….
Bi-partisan redistricting never left committee in the House…
Pay-day lending might not even get to conference
The triggerman bill will probably get vetoed by the governor…
The gas tax was just defeated by a House committee…

What will get accomplished this General Assembly session?

Anti-cockfighting laws.

You can tell that Republicans and Democrats aren’t interested in seeing anything of significant substance get passed this year for the commonwealth. There will be successes to be sure…but there is a whole lot of nay-saying and gridlock going on too.

I guess it is time once again for me to write a note to Bob Tata. If the House is opposed to funding transportation needs through an increase in the fuel tax then how do they propose going about it?

Anyone who drives (and that would be just about everyone) can see that Virginia has many unmet transportation improvement needs. An increase in the fuel taxes is (in my opinion) the fairest way to spread the pain. With the costs of fuel running over $3 a gallon, I doubt a prudent 5 cent increase is going to really matter that much. For many of us, the money lost sitting idling in stop and go traffic will cost more in the long run then spending 5 cents a gallon to improve traffic flow. With fuel running over $3 a gallon, the wiseman figures out spending an additional 5 cents a gallon to improve fuel economy is money wisely invested.
