Webb is still on the radar

Back in September of 2006, I wrote that Sen. Webb needed to commit for the full six years in office because he would make a good choice for VP, yet a lot of folks dismissed the idea.

Well, fast-forward to today when Brian Kirwin writes on Reagan’s GOP that the Boston Globe is reporting that both Hillary and Obama are considering choosing a VP before the convention as a way to sway super delegates. And, who should happen to be on their short-lists? None other than Jim Webb.

I see Clinton maybe picking early, but not Obama. His pick is more useful in the general, against McCain’s attacks along the “experience” vector. I see Richardson as a likely choice, still, just for the resume. As for being “appealing”, did anyone find Cheney appealing?

I could see Obama potentially tapping Webb, but to me it would seem to be a bit of an odd couple. I’m still holding hope for an Obama/Bredesen ticket, personally.

There is still A LOT of buzz around the Buckeye state that Ohio Gov. Ted Strickland will be the VP choice for Hillary… or at least a VERY high cabinet position.

He has been with her at almost every event here in Ohio, including her temper tantrum yesterday…

    But who knows.

I’ll admit that I’m one of the main cheerleaders on blogs and in private conversations with friends for a Webb vice presidency. But I actually don’t believe he’s that interested in it.

Just because he’s on a short list doesn’t mean he’ll really accept. I still agree with those who point out that he’s too much of a maverick for the role of vice president.

I’m not so sure I’d believe this. I still think if either Obama or Clinton are looking to Virginia, they’d be looking at Tim Kaine, not Jim Webb. The downside of course for the Democrats is that Bill Bolling becomes Governor.

I’ve heard that Strickland is under strong consideration as well.

Webb IS interested. Strickland IS interested… they all are.

As the saying goes, the VP slot is something no one ‘wants’, but no one turns down.

    A heartbeat away…

Or a pretzel away… Shame people didn’t consider that when voting for Bush (especially the second time around).

What happens if Jim Webb becomes Vice-President?

Well then we have an open seat for the Senate. I do not know about you guys, but it is looking like the candidates to replace John Warner in the Senate representing our state is Mark Warner or Jim Gilmore.

I like both of them. My hope is that we can find jobs for both of them.

It is my hope that Jim Gilmore would be selected to be John McCains running mate. If Jim were selected we Virginians could be confident that we would be well represented by John Warner in the Senate.

If Jim Webb were selected and won on the Democratic side? Then the loser of the race to replace John Warner could run for the seat to replace Jim Webb.

Worst comes to worst we Virginians only have to decide between Mark Warner and Jim Gilmore (hopefully he’ll be the Republican nominee for the Senate). With two choices like that we can’t go that wrong.
