Happy Birthday, GOP!

On Feb. 22, 1856, the Republican National Committee was born. Grand Old Partisan has the details.

Of course, folks from Wisconsin and Michigan might beg to differ on the actual date of establishment.

The RNC, not the Republican Party, was established on February 23, 1856. The GOP itself was established two years before. See the book described at http://www.republicanbasics.com for more information.

Read it…great book. Anyone interested in the core principles of the GOP must read and understand this book. Nice job!

I would argue that while the vote took place on Feb. 23, the meetings began on Feb. 22. But that’s semantics.

Also. the GOP clearly began two years before in Michigan or Wisconsin, depending on who you’re listening to. However, I think we all can agree that only when it became a national party with a national convention did it truly become a viable entity.
